From our beginning, the Scouting movement has taught young people to do their best, to do their duty to God and country, and to help others at all times. The basic aims of Scouting include teaching young people to be helpful, and to develop courage, self-reliance, and the ability to be ready to serve.

Over the next two Saturdays Scouts, leaders, and families will put into action what Scouting is all about! We are excited about the efforts of each one of you! Troop 609 is one of 562 units registered. 131,971 estimated youth and 51,726 estimated adults and leaders will be participating. We thank each of you for joining us in this effort!

As a reminder, we will be meeting at Westview on Saturday morning (Jan 24th) at 9:30AM and have a brief meeting where we will go over our target neighborhood and coordinate with the Pack.  We plan on then heading to the target neighborhood around 10:15 and begin distributing the door hangers, following the Safe Scouting guidelines.

This Saturday, November 15th, Troop 609 and Pack 609 will participate in the Sam Houston Area Council's Century of Service Celebration by participating in an outdoor conservation project at the Westview School.  The project involves cleaning out some of the flower beds at the school, both for  butterflies and vegetables.

Please plan on arriving at the school for our usual meeting time of 9:30AM on Saturday, dressed for gardening.  Please keep in mind the weather will be cool, with rain only chancy by the early afternoon.  Also appropriate to bring are leather gardening gloves and shovels.

Camp Strake Campout

posted Oct 12, 2014, 10:53 AM by Scout Westview

The camp out was a great success! We went canoeing practiced archery. We made breakfast tacos, and silver turtles with hot dog meat or steak.
Afterwards, we played a game like hide & seek, but with elements of tag in it. After all our activities, we slept well in our tents for two peaceful nights. My opinion for sleeping in tents; I felt really comfortable in my tent with my brother Julian.
We had fun.

A Great Start to the Season

posted Sep 30, 2014, 4:20 PM by Scout Westview

After a busy first month back, Troop 609 has accomplished quite a bit!  Coming off the success of the first campout at Bovay Scout Ranch, the boys have worked hard and continued to learn and demonstrate skills towards rank advancement.  Last Saturday saw the Troop participate with the Westview School's booth at the Walk Now for Autism Speaks event, helping to spread the word about the Troop, as well as teaching many people how to tie knots ranging from the square knot to the bowline, and their uses.  Next up will be a focus on first aid, followed by our next campout the weekend of Oct 10-12.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting this Saturday!

Open House and First Campout

posted Sep 3, 2014, 6:40 PM by Scout Westview

After a great first meeting of the year, which featured the creation of a new patrol and patrol leader elections, the Troop is looking forward to this Saturday, when we will be hosting our Fall Open House.  Held during our normal meeting time, the Fall Open House gives boys from outside the Troop or outside of Scouting the chance to see the Troop in action.
Come be a Scout with Troop 609 on Saturday, September 6th, from 9:30-11:30 AM at The Westview School

During the meeting, we will also finalize plans for our first campout of the season, including headcount.  The camp-out will be held at Bovay Scout Ranch in Navasota, TX, from September 12-14.  Information on the campsite can be found on the council website at

Scouting For Food

posted Jan 22, 2014, 2:16 PM by Scout Westview

This Saturday, January 25th, both Troop and Pack 609 will meet at The Westview School at 9 AM -  once everyone has arrived, we will assign each boy a target block (or two) on which to distribute door hangers.  Please be aware that we may be joined by a crew from a local news station, coordinated by the Council.  Let me know as soon as possible if anyone would like to be interviewed if this does come to pass.

A Cub Scout promises to "give goodwill" and a Boy Scout promises "to help other people at all times." There is no better way to show our Scouting Spirit than by participating in the annual Scouting for Food drive! Now is the time to show our community the Scouting values of being loyal, helpful, kind and cheerful.

Scouting for Food is scheduled for January 25 and February 1, 2014, when Scouts throughout the Sam Houston Area Council help make a difference to fight hunger. Scouting for Food is the leading service program for Boy Scouts of America and is a part of the national BSA program - Good Turn for America. In partnership with the Houston Food Bank and "Souper Bowl of Caring," this council-wide service project begins Saturday, January 25 as Scouts distribute door hangers in their neighborhoods to announce the upcoming food drive. Scouts return the following Saturday, February 1 to pick up and deliver donations to their local food banks and pantries.

All participating Scouts will receive a 2014 Scouting for Food patch at the March Roundtables.
